We are currently in the process of developing our 28-acre woodland site in Aberdeenshire, Brae of Towie, so that we can offer our award-winning creative engagement work in a stunning natural setting.
Brae of Towie is a degraded ancient semi-natural woodland in Aberdeenshire, and we are working hard with partners such as EFORESTS, I Dig Trees and the Woodland Trust, to revive and regenerate the woodland as well to create wildlife corridors to other woodland patches in the surrounding area.
This is a fully off-grid project with many flexible options for talks, tours and workshops. Local stays are possible for those looking to benefit from a deeper connection with the woodland, with fantastic group accommodation facilities on the doorstep in Cullen Community & Residential Centre and Portsoy Sail Loft, as well as many private options.
In Scotland, ancient woodland is defined as land that is currently wooded and has been continually wooded, at least since 1750. Semi-natural refers to ancient woodland that, through human intervention, has experienced some change in woodland structure and species composition.
Brae of Towie has been weakened by centuries of cutting and clearing, resulting in large areas of the brae becoming dominated by gorse and bracken. A dedicated tree-planting program is now underway: encouraging a variety of native and wild fruiting tree species throughout the site, and helping to restore the richer, more diverse flora and fauna that the woodland would once have enjoyed.
